BRENT LEATHERWOOD’S RECENT “RESIGNATION” (MEANING HE AGREED TO BE TERMINATED) AFTER 2 YEARS AS INTERIM PRESIDENT AND JUST 2 AS “OFFICIAL PRESIDENT” OF THE SBC’s ETHICS AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES COMMISSION IS JUST THE LATEST EVIDENCE OF AN EPIDEMIC OF JUDGEMENT FAILS FOR THE SBC. THEY JUST CAN’T GET IT RIGHT AND FINDING AN “ETHICAL” ETHICIST SEEMS TO BE THEIR BIGGEST CHALLENGE YET.
WHAT HAD THE NOW DEPARTED LEATHERWOOD BEEN DOING AT THE ERLC IN THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO HIS DEPARTURE? HE HAD JOINED ED LITTON AND A LINE UP OF RACIAL JUSTICE ACTIVIST TO RECYLCE SOUTHERN BAPTIST THROUGH EVEN MORE CRT/ BLM/ WOKE JUSTICE BASED EFFORTS IN THE NAME OF “RACIAL RECONCILIATION”.

Big news from the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberties came at the end of July when its latest SHOW PONY ethicist was forced to step down. Brent Leatherwood, who was hired and groomed by the even less loved Russell Moore, should have NEVER remained in the ERLC’s employ much less installed by the Board as President , chief lobbiest and “spokesperson” for the Southern Baptist Policy arm.

THE ERLC-LEATHERWOOD AND THE RACIAL PALOOZA OF ED LITTON.
Lest we forget – the April 2018 ERLC and The Gospel Coaltion event MLK/50 in Memphis is when the general population of the Southern Baptist suddenly woke up and smelled the WOKE Justice false gospel flooding thier landscape.

CRT was EVERYWHERE IN THE SBC/ERLC/ & TGC. It had been there- flooding the seminaries and Lifeway products and the stages at the SBC annual Conventions. BUT now it was undeniable as the speakers, talkings points, and POLITICS of the MLK/50 event echoed down through the ranks of “race shamed” weary Baptist.
By June of 2018 Revoice, the Baptist in house LGBTQ Christianity movement was in full swing and CRT was openly discussed on the Dallas CP stage by the herd of contributors for “Removing the Stain of Racism from the Southern Baptist Convention”.

In 2019 the SAME guys from that stage event, who wrote chapters for the book- would be on the Resolutions Committee to alter the intent of the now infamous RESOLUTIONS 9 legitimizing CRT AND INTERSECTIONALITY while the average Baptist was not clearly aware of what they meant or the history, origins or end game of Critical Theories.

ERLC’s LEATHERWOOD HAD JOINED ED LITTON IN YET ANOTHER CHAPTER OF CRT DRIVEN RACIAL ACTIVISM AGAINST THE SBC.
After the WOKE RACIAL MLK/50 event in 2018- it was Mobile pastor Ed Litton who had picked up the mantle with Russell Moore and John Perkins to “keep hope alive” for MLK/50s CRT messaging. Ed went on to be SBC President and was then exposed for sermon plagiarism along with former President JD Greer. (They even used the same bad jokes and canned “personal stories.)
Also keep in mind that it is disgraced and booted ERLC former President and Leatherwood boss and mentor Russell Moore who torpedoed the SBC in parting with accusations of “sex abuse coverups” and RACISM.Think that second part through as you consider again how poorly Baptist leadership handled the abuse accusations and the feminist of the “#MeToo ” movement in the denomination.
Moore’s standing racial accusations should be the best CLUE on why his disciple Leatherwood JOINED IN THE NEXT WAVE OF CRT coming into the SBC via Ed Litton.
ENTER ERLC /LEATHERWOOD INTO LEADERSHIP OF LITTON’S “UNIFY PROJECT”
UNIFY PROJECT appears to have began in 2022 and in New Orleans 2023 the ERLC and Leatherwood hosted its event at the SBC meeting. Sometime along the way since Brent Leatherwood took his role at ERLC President into the Leadership and had been participating in podcast for Litton’s organization.

The most recurring name being mentioned to take Leatherwood’s place (who took Russell Moore’s place) at the ERLC is YET ANOTHER ALBERT MOHLER and Russell Moore disciple Andrew Walker. Walker has friendships deep inside the TGC including at least two Revoice LGBTQ Christianity advocates. Walker is just one of many bearing the same tainted fingerprints of SBTS leadership who could be seen as “perfect for the job” at ERLC.
Walker was hired by Moore in 2013 to work under him as Moore came into his destructive tenure as ERLC President.

“WASHINGTON (BP)–Russell D. Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, has announced the appointment of Andrew T. Walker as the entity’s director of policy studies.”
Walker, 28, currently serves as policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation, one of the country’s most respected conservative think-tanks. He has worked within Heritage’s DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society on marriage, family and religious liberty issues. Prior to his appointment at Heritage, Walker was a policy analyst for the Kentucky Family Foundation where he focused on issues ranging from family studies to state-sponsored gambling.”
The New York Times featured Walker as one of the “undaunted” young conservatives advocating for the meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Likewise, Focus on the Family’s Citizen magazine profiled Walker and his Heritage colleague Ryan Anderson as representatives of a new generation of pro-marriage Christian activist/scholars.”
“At the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Walker will coordinate strategies for equipping churches to deal with moral and policy concerns. Walker joins Phillip Bethancourt of Texas and Daniel Patterson of Tennessee, who were named director of strategic initiatives and chief of staff to the president, respectively, upon Moore’s election to head the ERLC.”

WALKER LEFT THE ERLC IN OCT 2019 WHEN IT APPEARED THE RATS WERE LEAVING THE SINKING ERLC SHIP.
HE JOINED THE FACULTY OF SBTS AND THE MENTORSHIP OF ALBERT MOHLER- WHO DISCIPLED HIS CONTROVERSIAL FORMER ERLC BOSS RUSSELL MOORE.
“During Monday’s events, Southern Seminary President R. Albert Mohler Jr. announced to trustees the appointment of Southern Baptist and ethicist Andrew Walker as Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Apologetics, associate dean of the School of Theology, and director of the Carl F.H. Henry Institute for Evangelical Engagement.”
“Walker is moving to Louisville with his wife, Christian, and their three daughters: Caroline, Catherine, and Charlotte. He served with the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission for six years before coming to Southern, and will continue working with the ERLC as a part-time research fellow. Walker had been hired to the Southern Seminary faculty in May.”

CONCLUSION
Russell Moore spent 24 plus years at SBTS as a very close Mohler associate and it was Mohler who spoke at Moore’s “inauguration ” in 2013 as ERLC President along with Catholic Robert George. Leatherwood is a Moore hire at ERLC out of the political RINO realm of the TN political machine.He had NO theological training. It has been said that he was being “fast tracked” to some type of degree to lend him credibility as ERLC head.
NOTE again that Leatherwood /ERLC had VERY RECENTLY taken a leadership role in Ed Litton’s CRT /racial activists platform Unify Project in what appears to be a relaunch of MLK/50- Shrink the Divide/ BLM for Baptist / CRT Palooza for the agency laying the groundwork for accusation two of the “leaked Moore letters” which launched the #MeToo in the SBC.
YES it would appear that many of the SBC most complex controversies are indeed INSIDE JOBS.
BOTH Moore and Leatherwood have earned the distrust and disgust of many Southern Baptist and are both OUT at the ERLC. So will the next chapter in these wilderness wanderings be the installation of yet another Mohler/Moore/ ERLC/ SBTS disciple like Andrew Walker?
If Southern Baptist leadership and the Trustees of the ERLC wish to finish off the agency AND destroy what little confidence remains -then “one more lap” around the wilderness of WOKE progressive appointments and disrepectful “representaiton” by its “Ethics” (using the term both loosely and with a chuckle) arm would be the perfect path to follow. Past experience indicates there is little reason to be hopeful for real change of course.
