WITH THE SBC’s PRESENT TROUBLES BREWING “ON ALBERT MOHLER’S WATCH “, HE AND HIS HENCHMEN MAY BE DOUBTING HIS ABILITY TO WIN SBC PRESIDENCY.
Rev Thomas Littleton 22/24/2020
Since October 2019 Albert Mohler ,President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) in Louisville KY has been making Baptist news as the presumed new/next front runner to replace current controversial SBC President J D Greear. Some in the SBC are facing “buyers remorse ” over Greear, the young mega church pastor from North Carolina after his advocacy for “Pronoun Hospitality urging Baptist to live in the subjective reality of and use the preferred pronoun of transgender culture in order to make LGBTQ people “feel welcome”.
The idea of a Mohler presidency raises fears that it might deliver even more CREEP of the “WOKE”, Chrislam, Social Justice,Revoiced, Egalitarian Christianity threatening the denominations very existence in a not too distant future. Concern and growing frustration are ALREADY causing the SBC to hemorrhage both churches and members in a decades long decline that has proven irreversible thus far. This decline is also attributable to poor management of the Cooperative Program funding and programs which have resulted in big spending and negative growth for over a decade. More on these CP/ NAMB problems in article two in this series.
Regarding the 2020 Orlando election, Baptist seem to be understanding that ALL these ills coming upon the SBC took place on Al Mohler’s watch as President pf its flagship SBTS. Where was Al if not in the kitchen while all these ingredients were being adding to the SBC stew? The question more Southern Baptist may be considering is “Can the SBC afford more Mohler influence?”.
BIG AL FOR PRESIDENT
H.B. CHARLES ANNOUNCED HIS INTENTIONS TO NOMINATE MOHLER ON OCT. 31ST 2019
http://www.bpnews.net/53859/mohler-i-will-accept-nomination-as-sbc-president
“H.B. Charles Jr., senior pastor of mega Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., tweeted Thursday (Oct. 31) his intention to nominate Mohler when the SBC meets June 9-10, 2020, in Orlando, Fla.”
“I’m delighted to announce my prayerful intention to nominate @albertmohler as our next SBC president when we gather together in Orlando in June 2020 for our annual meeting,” said Charles… “Our times are filled with serious challenges from our culture, along with as incredible opportunities for Gospel witness.”
“Charles promoted Mohler as one capable of mobilizing the SBC behind a common vision.”
MOHLER SOLIDIFIED CHARLES NOMINATION QUICKLY ON NOVEMBER 1ST
“I am honored by the announcement by Pastor H. B. Charles, and I will accept nomination as president of the Southern Baptist Convention in June,” Mohler told BP. “All my life, I have sought to serve whenever asked by my denomination, and I would hope, if elected, to serve in a way that would unite Southern Baptists, strengthen our work together, add energy to our evangelism, and keep our hearts set on taking the [G]ospel to the nations.”
RECENT LANGUAGE SUGGEST MOHLER MAY BE LEAVING HIMSELF AN OUT.
Mohler granted an interview with B21 /Nate Akin during the recent Executive Committee (EC ) meeting where controversies manifest over the ERLC which is led by Mohler’s unpopular protege’ Democratic politician Russell Moore. Among other business, the EC appointed a task force to look into the ERLC where activist Moore and his Latte Mafia are having a negative impact (again) on Cooperative Funding .Over 100 churches withheld funding from the CP after Moore’s non stop inappropriate rhetoric against candidate Donald J Trump in 2016 wearied Trump enough to name the little Baptist lobbyist calling Moore a “nasty guy with no heart”. Russell Moore is the guy who is ever shaming Christians for “hurting the Gospel ” by their “hateful public political rhetoric. ” The irony and hypocrisy of Moore’s two faced approach is wearing thin with many Baptist as are his left wing political affiliations like the Obama White House and now Obama Foundation.
These problems DO blow back on Mohler since he both educated and employed Russell Moore for over 20 years at SBTS and was a large part of the force behind Moore’s rise through the SBC ranks to the head of the ERLC. The EC decision to look into ERLC is a problem for both Moore and Mohler and leaves a cloud of suspicion over both.
Meanwhile the B21 interview used language implying uncertainty concerning the Mohler nomination though it was already acknowledged and accepted by Mohler for the Presidency of the SBC in Orlando. The B21 wording strikes a cord of of a possible withdrawal of Mohler campaign. It has happened BEFORE.
NOTE :Akin refers to Mohler as a ‘potential candidate” for presidency of the SBC.
WHY?
“During the recent SBC Executive Committee meetings, Baptist21’s Nate Akin had the opportunity to interview Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr, President of SBTS and potential candidate for the 2020 SBC Presidential Election. During this interview with Dr. Mohler, the following important topics were addressed:”
- The current state of the Southern Baptist Convention
- Dr. Mohler’s candidacy for SBC President
- The newly announced Conservative Baptist Network
- Critical Race Theory and more.
NOTE these issues and more are plaguing Mohler and promise to persist given the mounting opposition to the mere idea of his “POTENTIAL” SBC leadership.
MOHLER HAS BEEN LAUDED AS THE SBC HAS CONTINUED IT’S DECLINE
As a darling of the national media, Mohler wears such labels as “one of America’s most influential evangelicals”, “reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S.” and has boasted at least a half dozen times to this writer that he “has appeared on the Larry King show 44 times”. (Forget that King retired over a decade ago.)
IS ALBERT MOHLER A BAPTIST RINO?
SURPRISING HISTORY OF THE LIBERAL ALBERT MOHLER
While Mohler is regarded as a towering figure in the “Conservative Resurgence ” in the SBC led by Paige Patterson and other imposing men of the Pulpit, Mohler has enjoyed haunting the hallowed halls of academia and has VERY LITTLE pastoral experience. Mohler followed in the wake of the leaders of the Conservative Resurgence which was defined by a singular focus upon the issue of “inerrancy of the Bible. The Mohler ascent to the Presidency of the denomination’s flagship Seminary SBTS came in 1993 after a short 3 year stint writing /editing at Georgia’s State Baptist Newspaper ” The Christian Index “.
BUT prior to his position at Georgia Index Mohler was FAR FROM a CONSERVATIVE.
According to Mohler’s close friend and college “pen pal” Mark Dever of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in DC and founder of 9MARKS (semi woke church planting organization), Albert Mohler was liberal in his views. Al was ” egalitarian ” in his views of inclusion of women for ordination and in pulpits and DID NOT BELIEVE IN THE INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE “.

Reformation and the SBC: A Round Table Interview with Tom Ascol, Mark Dever, and Jared Longshore
“In this interview, Jared Longshore asks Tom Ascol and Mark Dever about their 30+ year friendship, the reformation in Baptist life which has occurred over that time, and some counsel for the future work of gospel ministry.”
(NOTE : To hear Dever’s discussion of his history with the liberal young Albert Mohler forward to the last 15 minutes of the interview.)
TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING
MOHLER WILL NOT RUN “UNOPPOSED” IN HIS BID TO BE SBC PRESIDENT AND HIS RIVAL ADDRESSES THE SBC PROBLEMS WHILE MOHLER IGNORES HIS OWN ROLE IN THEM.
http://www.bpnews.net/54172/randy-adams-to-be-nominated-for-sbc-president
Randy Adams to be nominated for SBC president
“Adams’ intended nomination will be brought to messengers at the SBC annual meeting June 9-10 in Orlando, Fla.”
“Adams said that if elected, he would aim to focus on the SBC’s Great Commission efforts, rebuilding trust among the Convention’s churches, entities and other organizations, reported the Northwest Baptist Witness.”
“In an announcement on Adams’ personal website, he said he believes the SBC needs a directional shift.”
“I am allowing my name to be entered into nomination for the presidency of the SBC because I believe that we need a clear change in direction in order to fulfill our God-given mission and reverse our present course of decline in every key measurement of Great Commission advance,” Adams said in the announcement.”
“While Southern Baptists retain considerable ability to impact the world for Christ, we are currently experiencing our greatest challenge. After waging a decades-long battle for the Bible, we are in danger of losing the war we were founded to fight, that of advancing the Great Commission by making disciples and rescuing the captives of the evil one.”
“If we do not honestly confront issues others will do so, including those who do not love the SBC like we do. Christians must be able to engage in honest discourse, speaking the truth in love.”
ALBERT MOHLER MAY JUST BE MORE WORRIED THAN HE WILL EVER ADMIT AS A “FAILED RUN” FOR PRESIDENT WOULD FURTHER BLEMISH HIS IMAGE.
More OPPOSITION was announced just before Executive Committee meetings.
On Valentine’s Day 2020 the Conservative Baptist Network issued a press release and announced it’s movement to push back against some of the KEY issues facing the SBC.
OUR PURPOSE
“The Conservative Baptist Network is a partnership of Southern Baptists where all generations are encouraged, equipped, and empowered to bring positive, biblical solutions that strengthen the SBC in an effort to fulfill the Great Commission and influence culture. “
- The Network affirms the longstanding Baptist beliefs as expressed in the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.
- The Network affirms the inerrancy, supremacy, and sufficiency of the Bible in all facets of life and application.
- The Network affirms religious liberty and encourages Christian individuals and churches to influence the culture by engaging in the public policy process and demonstrating their patriotism.
- The Network rejects various unbiblical ideologies currently affecting the Southern Baptist Convention such as Critical Race Theory, intersectionality, and social justice.
- The Network is committed to seeing the SBC function biblically — efficiently, and strategically — believing Convention entities and leadership are accountable to and encouraged by the autonomous, local churches that cooperate together.
MOHLER IDENTIFIES HIMSELF IN OPPOSITION TO CBN IN A FOOLISH TWEET ATTEMPTING TO DEBUNK THE NEW GROUP. EC MEMBER ROD MARTIN COMMENTED.
Mohler has been associated with The Gospel Coalition, Together for the Gospel, and plethora of organizations with membership, vision AND mission statements, conferences, and sponsors. So IF he is not concerned about his own “conservative ” image and his candidacy for President of the SBC then why speak out against and establish yourself in/as opposition to the Conservative Baptist Network?
Since Mohler loves to do Q & A sessions called “Ask Me Anything” perhaps he will tell in advance if he is leaving himself an out in his bid for SC President in 2020 given the odds of winning may no longer be in his favor.
PARTS 2 AND 3 WILL EXAMINE THE DEEPER PROBLEMS WITHIN THE SBC ON MOHLER’S WATCH AND HIS ROLE IN THEM AND WILL ALSO DIVE DEEP INTO THE LINGERING DOUBTS THAT PLAGUE MANY WHO ONCE TRUSTED MOHLER AS A BIBLICAL CONSERVATIVE.
